World's Largest Mall Set To Open

The vast Dubai Mall shopping centre is finally set to open for business on Tuesday but the success of the 20-billion-dollar project is far from certain amid the global economic crisis.

The mall will be one of the world's largest with 1,200 shops, four times as many as the new Westfield centre in London, and it will be a tough call for the owners to meet their target of 30 million visitors in the first year.

Dubai Mall is situated at the foot of the Burj Dubai -- already the tallest building on earth at around 700 meters (yards) and still under construction.

The mall is scheduled to house branches of some of the world's best known retail chains, such as Marks and Spencer, Galeries Lafayette and even Bloomingdales, which has never before had stores outside the United States.

Chewing Gum Can Loss Weight?

Sorbitol, a sweetener used in sugar-free products such as chewing gum, can cause intestinal problems and severe weight loss, according to a report in BMJ, formerly the British Medical Journal.

Researchers said it has laxative properties and is poorly absorbed by the small intestine.

In at least two patients, that led to chronic diarrhea, pain and up to a 20 percent loss of body weight.

A 21-year-old woman chewed large amounts of sugar-free gum, accounting for a total daily dose of 18 to 20 grams of sorbitol. A 46-year-old man reported chewing 20 sticks of sugar-free gum and eating up to 200 grams of sweets each day, which together contained around 30 grams of sorbitol.

Johnny Grant "Hollywood Mayor" Passed at 84

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Johnny Grant, a tireless show business figure dubbed the "honorary mayor of Hollywood" for his devotion to the historic movie industry hub, died on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Police Department said. He was 84.

Grant was perhaps best known for introducing celebrities when they got their stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But he also made 60 overseas trips to entertain U.S. troops with the USO, and recently returned from a mission to Guantanamo Bay.

He organized the annual Hollywood Christmas Parade, and closely oversaw the make-over of Hollywood Blvd, a tourist destination that had fallen into decay by the early 1990s.

Bespectacled and always beaming, Grant would greet tourists as if they were long-lost friends. His body was discovered in his room at the Roosevelt Hotel on Wednesday evening. The cause of death was not immediately known.

"There will never be anyone who loved Hollywood as much as he," actress Angie Dickinson told local TV station KCAL.

Added June Lockhart, "There was no man who was more greatly involved for public relations for Hollywood."

As a suburb of Los Angeles, Hollywood does not have a mayor, but Grant's half-century of cheerleading for the area earned him the honorary moniker. Grant, who never married, is survived by three sisters.

Former "American Idol" finalist Jessica Sierra Sentenced to Rehab For Club Altercation

It's back to rehab for former "American Idol" finalist Jessica Sierra. The singer appeared in court Monday morning (January 7) in Tampa, Florida, and pleaded no contest to charges of disorderly intoxication and obstruction of an officer, which prompted Judge Daniel Perry to reluctantly agree to send her to rehab for a year.

The Tampa Tribune reported that Perry sentenced Sierra to spend the next year at the Pasadena Recovery Center in Pasadena, California — a facility he had reservations about because it has hosted TV programs in the past. He was concerned that Sierra might use the stint as a means of boosting her career, the paper reported.

"I don't want this to be some steppingstone for her to have a career as a recovering addict," Perry said.

Sierra's sentence also includes two years of probation, stemming from an incident on December 1 at a bar in Ybor City, Florida, during which the singer allegedly got into a heated confrontation with bar personnel and police after she was ejected from the bar. Perry also prohibited Sierra from doing any interviews or appearing on TV during her recovery, including any promotional spots for the upcoming reality show, "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew," which debuts on VH1 this Thursday.

The host of that program, Dr. Drew Pinsky, an addiction specialist, spoke on Sierra's behalf during the brief court appearance, according to the paper, telling the judge that the "low level" treatment she received on the reality show was not enough to deal with her level of addiction, but that a yearlong stint in treatment would give her a better chance for recovery. A spokesperson for the courts did not return calls for comment at press time and Sierra's lawyer, John Fitzgibbons, could also not be reached for comment.

During the December arrest, Sierra, 22, was ejected from the Full Moon Saloon and, after confronting patrons on the street, allegedly became combative with police as they tried to arrest her, calling the officers names, vomiting in the police car, yelling racial slurs and offering sexual favors in exchange for her release, according to an arrest report.

The arrest violated Sierra's probation from an incident in April of last year, which resulted in charges of cocaine possession and felony battery, after she allegedly hit a bar patron in the head with a glass; she also pleaded no contest in that incident. Tampa TV station WTSP reported that Perry warned Sierra that if she doesn't follow the rules of the rehab center she will be brought back to Florida and put in prison for a year.

Pinsky said that Sierra had already completed her portion of the "Rehab" show before the December arrest, and he described her as a "courageous" patient, who had been "on the street" doing drugs before she sought treatment. He also said the singer, who is pregnant with her first child by a man she has only described as "a rapper," made some "very poor choices" during her drug-using phase, including a video the paper said he described as "symptomatic of her addiction." Pinsky and Sierra reportedly discuss the video — which TMZ has reported is a sex tape — on the show.

In a preview of the VH1 show screened by the Tribune on the day before Sierra's sentencing, the paper described a scene from the second episode of "Rehab" during which Sierra breaks down in tears while discussing her mother's death from a drug overdose while the singer was auditioning for "Idol." During the group therapy session, Sierra talks about how she hates her mother for abandoning her, doing drugs and becoming a prostitute and becomes so upset after revealing the information that she becomes desperate for a drink, saying she would have "chewed the alcohol swabs" at the facility if she could have.

Macworld 2008 bets: Notebooks, Blu-ray, and iPhones?

id=After a holiday spent freezing in the wilds of Connecticut and pondering the mysteries of the chip industry, I felt it was time to take stock of the latest Macworld Expo rumors.

The craziness is just 12 days away and undisturbed this year by that big gathering in the desert taking place the prior week. The predictions are starting to come in, and the early bets have mobility in mind.

For months, the betting odds have favored the introduction of new MacBooks at Macworld. It's been awhile since Apple tweaked the basic hardware design of the MacBook, and with new mobile processors expected from Intel this quarter, it seems like a natural fit. But what kind of notebook are we talking about?

The most persistent rumor is that Apple will release an ultraportable notebook, or a sub-notebook, or whatever you want to call it. Think small and thin, a 12-inch or smaller screen and a weight of less than 3 pounds. This is a small segment of the overall notebook market, but it's one of prestige, and it's not hard at all to imagine Apple wanting to put its stamp on the thinnest and lightest category of notebook computing.

The latest item to point in that direction? A patent filing for a docking station that would incorporate such a device surfaced this week, lending some credibility, if not confirmation, to the ultraportable rumor.

If you want to watch high-definition movies on your notebook, American Technology Research's Shaw Wu thinks you'll have a better idea of Apple's HD video plans following Macworld. Wu put out a research note Thursday predicting that Apple will confirm its support for Blu-ray drives, and could use the occasion to announce plans to ship notebooks with new optical drives. Apple is already a member of the Blu-Ray Disc Association, so this isn't much of a stretch, although it has held off releasing Blu-ray-equipped products to this point.

There's also some sentiment that Apple could use the Macworld stage to announce its take on the Tablet PC, revealing some sort of slate-like MacBook based entirely on flash memory, and perhaps incorporating many of the touch-screen features found on the iPhone. We've also heard this discussion center on a Apple-ish UMPC, which would ostensibly use Intel's upcoming Silverthorne chip.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs is unlikely to miss a chance to talk about the iPhone as well, as we approach the first anniversary of its first public unveiling. The software development kit for the iPhone is due in February, and some analysts think that Jobs will use the occasion to unveil a 3G iPhone.

The biggest news to emerge from Jobs' January 15 keynote might just be an iTunes movie rental service, as was reported over the holiday break. But I'd advise holding off for a few weeks if you were thinking about buying a notebook from Apple.
